Three complementary programs aim at improving grapevine health and wine quality.

1/ Durable resistance to downy and powdery mildews:
Breeding new grapevine varieties durably resistant to downy and powdery mildews as an alternative to the massive use of fungicides.

2/ Virus resistance and virus vectors:
- Development of resistance strategies to challenge GFLV, the virus responsible of fanleaf disease;
- Identification of the factors (viral, plant and invertebrate) involved in viruses transmission by different vectors (nematodes, mealybugs and aphids).

3/ Grapevine Secondary Metabolism
The team " Grapevine Secondary Metabolism" (MSV), led by Philippe Hugueney, uses functional genomics approaches to address two scientific questions:
- The role of grapevine secondary metabolism in natural defense mechanisms against pathogenes, and especially against Plasmopara viticola, the agent of downy mildew;
- The biosynthesis of aroma compounds in grape berries, which are important determinants of wine quality.
